Sony PS3 Slim Review

PlayStation 3 120 GBBy Anthony Milner

The biggest drawback of PS3 was probably its price. However, this time round Sony has not only slimmed down its size, but also its price. Sony has been in the process of phasing out PS3, where PS3 Slim is the most viable replacement. The price being cut down by about $100, PS3 Slim is more affordable than its fat old brother. Other than this you basically get all the features of the older version minus the issues such as size and power consumption.

The issue of power consumption has been adequately addressed by Sony by employing 45 nm manufacturing process, which reduces power consumption by 36%. The company has been slowly phasing out PS3 by taking away its features one by one. PS3 Slim having almost the same functionalities is a good choice for those looking to replace their PS3s.The matte finish isn't very appealing, but it's a better choice over the dust attracting glossy cover.

Another small yet significant change is the noise made by the disc-drive. It is very noticeable while playing some games and can be little disturbing. However it is subdued while watching movie on the Blu-ray disc. Like its older brother, PS3 Slim allows you to playback MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 from its USB ports or any disc-based media player. The back of the console comes with the PlayStation's proprietary AV output, an Ethernet jack, HDMI output and optical digital audio output.

PS3 Slim is a disappointment for those still having PS2, as the new system is not backward compatible with PS2. So if you cannot do without your favorite games on PS2, its best to go with the original version of PS3.

If you already own a PS3, the Slim version does not offer anything great, unless of course you need to replace your PS3 for technical reasons. But those thinking of buying the PS3 and waiting for Sony to slash the prices, PS3 Slim can be a great choice. It's a great console which looks the part to. This may be the PS3 upgrade you were looking for.
