Six Tricks To Make You Better At Tower Defence Games

By Terry Ward

Imagine yourself as a great and powerful king, in charge of a successful kingdom. Your nobles are loyal, your military flourishing, and even your peasants love you. Suddenly, the black cloud of war approaches, and you find yourself under siege. Your only option is to defend your castle, or perish to your attackers. Tower defence games are popular, simple strategy games that place the player under that situation.

These games, otherwise occasionally known as "Defend the Castle", will require you to purchase and hire units to be placed along your attackers' paths. Following their placement, these soldiers will valiantly defend against any enemies that walk near. The strategy comes in the variety of options to be placed, their strengths and weaknesses, and even simply how to effectively place them.

An important tip that is often overlooked is to simply observe or maybe even write down what you see as you play through the game. Understanding your enemy is the first step to properly destroying your enemy, so it is important to learn just what exactly is trying to take over your building. If that super-powered Ogre takes extra damage from turrets, it will help greatly to remember to use turrets against Ogres in the future, or if you go through that level again.

It may seem that turret which attacks extremely slowly and does little damage is useless, but such a unit is probably there for a reason. Perhaps, if your turrets take damage from enemies, you can place the slower, weaker ones in front of the stronger ones to take damage instead, keeping your stronger ones alive and firing for a longer period of time. It is to your advantage to know how to use your troops.

In some versions, you can place turrets or other pieces directly in the way of your attackers. This brings up a very potent tactic to give yourself more time to defend. Place your troops in a way to force the enemy to take longer to reach their goal. If there is a very straight path the enemies can walk, maneuver your army in a way to make your opponents walk a longer path.

Occasionally, Defend your Castle games will include extra things such as traps, spikes along the road, and catapults to rain rocks from. Try to place these to be most effective. Sometimes, less is more, and having traps that do not help is particularly unhelpful.

Gold or other currencies are a necessary mechanic that creates a difficult curve while also creating a commodity. The distribution of this gold is very important not to mess up, as it is one of your primary resources. If you are unsure how to use your gold at the moment, then rarely does it hurt to hold on to it and make the decision later.

Tower Defence games can run the gambit from easy to difficult. Some may be simple, and others complicated. The most important thing to keep in mind, however, is to have fun. If you have fun playing them, then you will improve, and you will enjoy yourself while improving, too.
