What Is Mmorpg?

By Larry Sabler

MMORPB is the acronym for Massive Multiplayer Online Role Play(ing) Game, and can be briefly described as a type of computer game that is played online and participated in by players all over the world who has access to a computer.

The unique feature is that the player can choose his/her role and persona and play the part, and sets a goal that the part must accomplish in a make believe world. This world supposedly exists and is to be found in a permanent server and players in their assumed roles do their things inside this world. If one player is not playing, this virtual world will continue to exist with the presence of other active players. It is in this respect that the MMORPGs is similar to the real - and existing world.

Pin one particular instance in World of Warcraft, an event occurred where a spell effect which lowered the players health slowly over time was spread from player to player. For a time, there was chaos and confusion as the disease assumed epidemic proportions and players scampered to take cover. Eventually, a safe haven was established and the problem was contained but the experience was an eye opener because of the realistic circumstances.

Most, such as World of Warcraft and Guildwars, are based in fantasy and myth and involve magic and spells. Also a favorite backdrop is outer space with spacecrafts and planets inhabited by fictional creatures. It has been known that some games are based on the real world, with players scouring the maps for the ideal locations in the planet, and even the players' own places are included in the consideration.

MUDs, or Multi-User Dungeons, were the first. They are usually simple text based programs where the players use commands to control and interact with their character, the world, and other players. The game is comparatively simple compared to the latter games, but are also played with 2D graphical versions and 3D MUDs. The browser based MMORPGs are somewhat similar to MUDs, and are played only in the user's browser, e.g, RuneScape. The programs of these are text based, and some are in 3Ds, and just like the newer MMORPGs are practical to use, and most can be played for free.

MMORPGs gained prominence about a decade ago and are today a popular choice of many online players. Worldwide, they are earning billions and the total take is rising year after year.
