The Macromedia Shockwave Player

By Jennifer Bowers

Almost 400 million people have installed the Macromedia Shockwave player on their computers. This popularity is perhaps to a large extent due to the superior quality and detail of the online games with the Macromedia Shockwave Player. It is the first of Macromedia's multimedia player and was introduced in the market before the Flash. Though it was specifically designed for movies, Shockwave has become the tool of choice for developing online games.

The 3D engine used with Shockwave is the most powerful in existence today for online games. Even the very popular Java is now running second behind it. Most developers now use this amazing tool to create free online games. The Shockwave players are configured to play all flash files. The Shockwave engine is not only attuned to the video hardware of the user but it is also faster than Flash in producing objects.

So far, the Shockwave engine has produced free online games of very high quality. It is not far fetched to entertain notions that this device will eventually challenge the supremacy of the console games. While this may sound slightly far fetched, it is far from being impossible. Many argue that the graphics capability of the Shockwave engine can compete with or surpass that of the PSP or Nintendo DS. While this is up for debate, there can be no doubt that Shockwave is a force to be reckoned with.

Shockwaves can produce many games of different types. Racing games, RPGs, fighting, and simulators are all currently available in Shockwave. However, to play most of the free online games, the users must have to comply with the required system requirements. This requirement is Shockwave's weakness when compared with console games. Games that are designed for specific consoles are all playable. In the case of Shockwave, using a computer with sufficient power is a requirement. Shockwave however more than makes up for this deficiency in terms of cost.

You can play Shockwave games for free, or you can download for as low as $9.50 per download. Now, compare that with the $40.00 per PSP game or the $60 for an Xbox 360 game and the cost difference becomes a factor. As better games are released in Shockwave, we may see a shift in popularity from console games back to computer games in the future. Shockwave was and is a major player in the production and development of free online games.
