Rules And Terminology Of Online Blackjack

By Joe Manonn

Blackjack is believed by many people to be an overly simple game where the only goal is to make your hand as close to or total 21. This is true but there are several other terms and things that a player should know to form a winning strategy for online blackjack.

The first thing that you should know is the value of the cards. Aces can be either a 1 or an 11 and a hand that contains an ace is a soft hand. All the other cards through nine are simply the face value of the cards. The ten and all the face cards are worth ten.

The dealer will start dealing cards to his left and will make two passes. There are two different sets of rules that the dealer must abide by. In some games, he will have to stand on 17. This means that once he has 17 he can go no higher. Other games will allow him to hit on soft 17. This means that if he has an ace in his original two cards he will be allowed to draw another card.

Then you can decide what you want to do with your cards. You can hit, receive another card, or you can stand, stay with what you have. There are a few more options that will be discussed later but these are the basics.

There are a few other options that you can consider when playing. Some games will allow you to surrender at half the cost of the original bet. If you choose to do this, you must do it before taking any cards or doing any other action. Also, some games make you wait until the dealer checks his hand for blackjack before you can surrender.

You can also choose to double down. This can only be down before you receive more cards. It means that you will double your bet and can only receive one more card during play.

If you are dealt a pair you can choose to split them. You will then have two separate hands. You must lay the same bet down on the second as you did on the original.
