Activision And Bungie Deal Explained By Bobby Kotick

By Robert Witherspoon

In April 2010 the American video game company Activision Blizzard Inc announced plans to partner with Bungie, one of the premier studios in the independent gaming industry. Bungie was founded in 1991 with the focus of developing games that combine outstanding technology, beautiful art, and engaging stories.

The partnership is beneficial to both Bungie and Activision. Harold Ryan, President of Bungie was quoted as saying, "We chose to partner with Activision on our next IP because of their global reach, multiplatform experience and marketing expertise. From working together over the past nine months on this agreement, it is clear that Activision supports our commitment to giving our fans the best possible gaming experiences."

For Activision Blizzard Inc., one of the largest third party video game publishers in the world, the benefits of a partnership with Bungie are clear. Big publishers, such as Activision, grow by acquiring independent developers, and Bungie has produced some of the best selling and most successful games, hailed as classics by critics and gamers around the globe, including "Marathon Trilogy", the first two "Myth" games, and "Halo". The Halo franchise alone is an international award-winning entertainment phenomenon that has sold more that 25 million units worldwide. Nearly 2 billion hours of Halo play time has been logged over Xbox LIVE. Activision appreciates that Bungie has developed a thriving fan community and the collaboration will go a long way toward promoting Activision's commitment to developing the industry's best creative talent.

Activision's CEO Robert "Bobby" Kotick praises Bungie, quoted as calling them an unusual indie gaming company. Kotick is enthusiastic about the alliance between the two companies, stating that Bungie is a high quality independent developer. The deal will maintain Bungie's status as an independent game developer, but will grant exclusive rights to Activision to publish a new gaming franchise. The creative genius of Bungie combined with the power of PlayStation 3 represents a win for gamers worldwide as well.

Activision proves to be universally exciting as Bungie will have a much broader scope for getting its games into gamers hands, and gamers look forward to new entertainment and action from these two companies on the horizon.
