I'm a pilot and I'm always looking for a great flight simulator to play when I'm not flying my Cessna. In this article I'm going to give you a few tips on what you should look for in a flight simulator. Hopefully you read this before you buy! I know if I had read an article similar to this I would have saved myself a ton of money and avoided several unrealistic flight simulation purchases.
Let me repeat first of all that I'm a flying addict. Anytime I'm not flying, I'm thinking about flying (and it drives my wife nuts!). Even though I don't have much time to fly, I always make sure that on my days off I get in the plane or play a simulation. Doing this is more than just fun, I'm also preparing for an upcoming instrument rating exam.
I'm going to tell you a few things you should know before you buy your next flight simulator. First, finding a simulator that is very realistic is incredibly important to the game's longevity. If it's not realistic, you won't play it for long. Look for realistic planes, airports, maps, and weather.
Next, make sure that your computer can handle the game. At one point I had a computer that was allocated to only running a flight simulator. It took up a ton of space, to say the least! Now I'm operating on a Mac laptop, and its great when I find a simulator that will work on any operating system. So when searching for a sim game double check that your computer can run it without crashing.
Last, you will need to make sure that the simulation comes with updates and support. If it doesn't you might be paying an arm and a leg, just to keep the game up to date! I'm lucky enough to have found a flight simulator that gives me free updates for life! And, it even came with a 100% refund if I didn't like it. Obviously I decided to keep it, since it gives me everything a good flight simulator should have.
