Cloud Computing May Be The Next Big Thing - There Are Still Reasons For Renting Server Hosting

By Angel Hebert Talley

Since the beginning of the Internet, dedicated servers have been around. Dedicated servers are different to the original ones, but still in many ways the same. The common misconception is that dedicated servers only have one job. This isn't true- a server can do many things at once. Servers will meet any of the following jobs.

Website hosting is a popular use for servers. This can be shared out over multiple users or simply for one website. Website hosting servers normally run Linux as it is considered more secure. Money can also be saved on licensing. Web hosting is usually provided in two main formats - shared and reseller. Shared allows for a single account, with multiple accounts on one server. You can host as many domains as you like on a reseller account.

Databases also make use of server hosting. It depends on the operating system as to what database can be ran. MySQL normally runs along side web hosting. You can also pick from InnoDB or Oracle for example. Databases power most websites you visit.

Dedicated game servers are used to power gaming servers. By using a dedi server for your online gaming you get fast paced action without the lag that occurs from using a listen server from you own PC. It also means that all the maths required to work out the player positions etc. does not affect your own game play. Connectivity is an important reason for choosing a dedicated server. Dedicated servers hosted in a datacentre normally have excellent bandwidth.

Server hosting is also used for file servers. For example, you may have seen links to photos. Some websites allow for Internet users to upload photos, and then reference them by URL. The owners normally make their money through banners. Programs and applications are also hosted on file servers. The final use of server is for voice over IP. With voice servers for Ventrilo and Teamspeak, and open source applications such as Mumble, voice over IP is a growing industry on the Internet. Voice server software is installed and runs on a dedicated server. Users then connect to the dedicated server for a fast connection.

Recently we have seen the introduction of cloud software. Cloud software groups multiple servers and splits up resources for supposedly better reliability, and definitely for scalability. Despite this, dedicated servers will always be around and have a use on the net.
