Are Online Flight Simulators Influenced by Arcade Developments?

By Clare Johnson

Originally, the many PC flight simulator games which are available today, were created for consoles. Some were distributed to the arcades. It is believed, however, that the majority were created with the PC in mind.

The video game industry is active on both sides of the Pacific Ocean, and flight simulation games attract players in all countries of the world. Landing High Japan by Taito, illustrates this fact better than any other game. While it was distributed as a cabinet game, players can certainly hope for Taito to develop online flight simulators in the same vein. Landing High Japan featured actual maps from the airports at Haneda, Kansai, Fukuoka, Hiroshima and Shin-Chitose.

Players were able to choose from five aeroplanes and if they chose to make the game more real, they could press a button and allow speech. Each of the planes were designed based on real planes and allowed users to fly with All Nippon Airways. This game had the potential of being an excellent flight simulator online.

Taito released flight simulator software for the arcades called Midnight Landing in 1987 and in 1988, released a similar product called Top Landing, which was very similar.

It might seem rather strange that Taito waited until 1999 to release this penultimate arcade game. Perhaps they wanted to design a game around the Power PC603e microprocessor. If they continue to think about hardware, gamers might see some online flight simulator games from the same developer. While Taito might not be working on Internet releases, it strangely seems that Google has.

Although Google flight simulator may not be the most advanced software, it could be used for you to become familiar with this type of gaming. An unusual feature of their software is a giant Easter egg and by pressing control+alt+A or similar keys, players can tour the world by flying either the F16 Viper or Cirrus SR22 utility plane. Their maps add a real life experience for the user.

Google Earth is a very popular piece of software. Employers often complain about how much time is lost because of office clerks messing around with it. While it might be fun to waste time with, serious gamers might want to look elsewhere if they want to play a flight simulator.

There is a popular game by Sentou Yousei Yukikaze, entitled Yousei no Mau Sora, which flight simulator fans hope will be released online. This game was created for Xbox and eventually joined other Japanese PC flight simulators. The best part was that this game was based alongside the anime series, although unfortunately, it was not released in North America. The reason for this is unknown as Anime and Manga have become well-known outside of Japan. Perhaps niche games of this sort may not be popular elsewhere.
