On February 11, 2011 at the American International Toy Fair in New York City, Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, announced the release of a new video game called Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure that merges the world of toys and video games in a new way.
Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure lets players transport real-world toys inside a virtual game world by placing toy characters on a wireless portal of power. The characters then appear inside the video game and are being described as inter-action figures. The game will come with three action figures, including the beloved character Spyro the Dragon, and the power portal, but up to 32 characters will be available separately.
The storyline for Activision's new game was written by Academy Award-nominated Toy Story feature film writers, Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow, and the soundtrack scored by the legendary Hans Zimmer. The three action figures that come with the game allow the user to complete the adventure-filled storyline using each character's special moves and attributes. The additional characters that will be sold separately will introduce new adventures for the user by unlocking new areas inside the game. With a separate memory in each figure, kids can bring their toy to a friend's house and pick up right where they left off.
This is new territory for Activision, who typically frequents video game trade shows and has not had a presence at Toy Fair in the past. Bobby Kotick thinks that the game will change the way kids interact with toys and video games and will open up new revenues streams for both the toy and game industries.
Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure has been on multiple lists of 2011's best new games introduced at the American International Toy Fair in February. The video game was demonstrated at Toy Fair on the Nintendo Wii, but no announcements have been made regarding which other platforms will offer the game.
