A Look At The Evolution Of Online Games

Even though their popularity shot up in the 90s, online games have in fact been around since the 60s. The development of online games paralleled the development of computer networking technologies. When they first came to be, online games were confined to primitive text-based interactions and graphics but as computer networks became more advanced, multimedia games have become commonplace.

It is said that the earliest online games were developed by computer scientists and students using Arpanet and PLATO networks, which are considered as the precursors of the Internet. Multiplayer games of the seventies, like Air Fight and Star Trek, were already supported by these networks.

Commercial online games considerably increased in number with the arrival of the World Wide Web in the 90s. People from all over the world were introduced to games like Doom, Quake and War Craft which to this day still have earned cult-like following. With the increasing availability of high-speed, low-cost Internet, and powerful gaming consoles and computers, modern online gaming came into existence. In the latter part of nineties, massively multiplayer online games were introduced and have since grew into a major business that attracts many developers globally. With the introduction of social networking websites, Internet games was able to tap a much wider market, captivating both mature and much younger gamers, and even piquing the interest of non-gamers.

One kind of online game that remains very popular these days is racing online games. Some of the games developed in the sixties and the seventies involved a racing component. Online racing games usually involve controlling high-performance vehicles and the gamer's goal is to beat his own record or compete in a race course with other players. With advancements in computer, gaming console, and Internet technology, playing online racing games have become an even bigger hit.

Our inherent love for cars and our need for speed are at the core of the popularity and longevity of these kinds of games. Aside from that, these games also allow us to drive our dream cars which we could not afford in the real world, and even modify them to our liking. The racing online games we have these days try to provide a much more realistic experience. For example, there are games which will give a visual representation of how it would look like if you sped up. Recent game titles even have physics engines which bring about handling issues whenever you crash your car. There is a vast array of online racing game titles, from simple ones to those made for advanced players. Lastly, they provide hours of extreme fun. Whether you're young or old, playing online racing games will be worth your while.
