Modern Warfare 3, like its recent predecessors, is played as a first-person shooter. Meaning a person who is playing the game views it through the perspective of the main character. A player takes control of many playable characters throughout the game and must complete many different missions.
During each of the game's missions, players are guided by a series of helpful hints, from location markers to lists of objectives. Health is similar to the franchise's previous versions, damage to the character is displayed on the screen and a health bar is visible.
It features 3 characters from the older versions: John MacTavish or Soap, John Price, and the Russian, Nikolai. The group is joined by a soldier called Yuri. Vladimir Makarov also comes back and serves as the game's antagonist. New characters include a Delta soldier and a federal agent from Russia called Westbrook and Harkov, respectively.
Modern Warfare three's main plot is quite like that of the original two installments, in that it is mostly set in the Middle East and takes place in modern times. At the beginning, two of the characters from Modern Warfare 2 are transporting a wounded soldier to an Indian safe house. They hook up with a number of other people and must decide how to safely leave the country.
Meanwhile in the United States, Russia's invasion culminates in a battle for New York City. The player, acting as different characters, must avert a global conflict.
