By Kate Randall

Not everyone is comfortable opening up a computer to repair or upgrade it. Some people are though, and for them, there are simple things to remember when opening a machine for the first time. If you like to tinker and are comfortable with the idea of computer repair, an upgrade may seem like child's play as long as the basic safety rules are followed.

A brand new machine or one necessary for business may be better off in the hands of a professional. There are things that can go wrong that a novice might not catch and will render the machine useless or require costly repairs by pros. Machines that are new and under warranty are usually best worked on by approved service techs.

Opening up a PC or laptop and poking about is not always the best troubleshooting method it's best to know what you are checking. If you choose to open up the case on a device turn the device off first and turn off any backup power supply. Wait several minutes because devices can hold a dangerous charge even after the power is off.

Choose a well lit area to remove the cover of the machine. Make sure the power supply is off and unplugged. Place the screws in a cup nearby or other container so when you put the machine back together, you can find the parts.

Put on your antistatic wrist guard and remove any jewelry. Static electrical discharge can ruin computing devices. Troubleshooting a PC usually involves checking all drive connections to be sure they are not loose as they are often the problem. Dust clogging the fan or on inside of machine can be blown away with compressed air.

Easy tasks like memory upgrades can take only a short time. Keep the parts removed from the machine, if the upgrade doesn't work well they can be put back in. Computer repair can be easy if simple precautions are followed.
