WoW - The Warlock Guide

By Gunnar Schweitzkopf

My World of Warcraft warlock guide will endeavor to teach you everything you need to understand to start playing as a warlock. Warlocks are best known for their shadow and fire magic spells and especially for the ability to summon and enslave minions. Casting unholy spells of torment and suffering are a warlock's bread and butter. They can inflict incredible spell damage from afar but are rarely in the middle of things because of their low armor class.

A lot of talents require the use of soul shards, which a warlock has to obtain by killing enemies. The warlock is one of the fastest leveling classes and really shines when playing solo. When raiding with a party, warlocks often do massive amounts of damage and need to be careful not to pull aggro off of the tanks.

Allowable races for the warlock class are Blood Elves, Humans, Undead, Gnomes, and Orcs. Since warlocks are classified as a caster class, they are allowed only to don cloth armor. Weapon-wise, warlocks are restricted to using only wands, staves, swords and daggers.

Warlocks are best known for their ability to summon and control a variety of demonic minions including Imps, Voidwalkers, Succubi, Felhunters, Infernals, Doomguards, and Felguards. All of the minions can be valuable, but you'll have to weigh the advantages of each of them for the job at hand.

Whether it be damage over time (DoT), direct damage (DD), or demon summoning, the warlock can cast a full range of spells. Soul shards can be utilized for conjuring items and even for resurrecting your raid partners. Other abilities include self healing through the use of drain life, and crowd control with fear. One of the overlooked benefits that warlocks have is that they do not need to pay nearly as much gold as other classes to acquire their mounts (Dreadsteed and Felsteed).

Affliction talents are designed to improve the warlock's curses, damage over time spells, and drains. This works great for farming, boss killing, and raiding. Affliction is the best specialization for leveling quickly.

Demonology talents are focused on creating more lethal demons and enhancing your summoning spells. The Demonology spec is really useful for PvP and overall survivability. It is also good when leveling, though it isn't really as good as Affliction. You will be extremely reliant on your demon minions with this spec.

The Destruction spec increases the direct damage output of both your fire and shadow group of magic. Your warlock will be able to do incredible amounts of damage and destruction, but the downside is that you will have reduced survivability. The Destruction talent tree is best used later in the game, because it is hard to live long enough to use it during lower levels. Note that this spec isn't so great for solo play. Also, it suffers from low mana efficiency and has a heavy dependency on farming soul shards. However, it is very satisfying watching health bars drop to nothing at lightning speed.
