All about Mario Games Series

By John McKenzie

Mario games were created by a game designer by the name Shigeru Miyamoto. Its main character, after whom the game has been named, is the Nintendo mascot. He first featured in Donkey Kong in 1980, the first game in this series. To date, the list of games has grown to over 200 and is still on the rise.

The games are played using a number of methods, depending on their nature. A common trend involves having the main character crush enemies by jumping on them. This is done while at the same time he tries to avoid injury from these enemies missiles. In the course of the game, he acquires points according to the feats performed and gradually advances towards a specified destination.

There are 2D and 3D play platforms of Mario games that offer a number of different options. In the 2D mode of play, the terrain of play is linear and the player has to find a way through pipes and crawl spaces while uncovering hidden items. Going through one level successfully gives him access to a different better level.

3D provides a more detailed arena whereby the player can move in any direction in a particular world. The different worlds are connected by over-worlds which a player can only access after completing the challenges. By collecting power stars, he is able to explore the present world to a great extent and to enjoy the game much more.
In different versions of the Mario games, a player may choose the level of play or have to stick to the prescribed order. The key to surviving is by making use of the energy boosters provided along the way.

All in all, this gaming series has sold more than 200 million units and as a result it holds the title for the best selling video game line. Some of the recent games released in the series include Super Mario Galaxy II and New Super Mario Bros - both released after November 2009.
There are Mario games belonging to a variety of categories for example puzzle games, racing competitions, role playing games, fighting and adventure games.
