Consideration For Your Gaming Machine

By James Keyes

It can be rather difficult to select between gaming laptops. Usually, you have to sacrifice power for mobility because they are designed to be portable. Since the manufacturers of computers tend to design less powerful and smaller machines, when you start shopping for a gaming machine you need to know what you're looking at.

A gaming laptop is designed around the graphics card, the RAM, and the processor as all serious gamers already know. The best selection for a gaming laptop is the one that has the most powerful processor. You need a processor that translates well into gaming applications by being designed for efficient multitasking. These types of processors are a compromise between long battery life and high performance.

Hard drive space, video memory, and RAM are all important to the gaming machine. While your gaming computer is processing applications, RAM is the memory it uses. You need as much RAM as you can get and a minimum of 2 Giga bytes. You also need a RAM that offers reduced power consumption, faster performance, and the highest performance.

Another important memory component is the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) which is the memory in your graphics card. For graphic applications, Discrete Graphic Cards (DGC) uses their own memory for graphics applications while Integrated Graphics Cards (IGC) uses the computer's RAM. You need a minimum of 256 Mega bytes of independent memory for graphic functions and it should be GPU for a gaming laptop.

The final consideration for your gaming machine is hard drive space. The computer you select for gaming should have a hard drive speed of 7200 RPM because speed is essential to gaming applications. Parallel ATA hard drives are not desired for gaming computers and SATA hard drives are best because they transmit data as much as thirty times faster and they consume less power. If you intent to use your computer for multimedia applications of if you're a serious gamer you need hard drive space of at least 160 Giga Byte.

The display adds power consumption and weight but it also will immerse you in the game. The small 10" displays won't allow you to become immersed in the game but they are great for portability. A gaming machine should at least have a display that is 15". A wide screen 17" display is the most popular selection but you will sacrifice some mobility. Regardless of all the manufactures claims, you should select the display that is the most visually appealing to you.

The sound card is probably the most frequently overlooked feature of a gaming laptop. You shouldn't underestimate the power of a sound card regardless if you want to use external sound. The manufacturers of these machines are now including integrated audio chips that are high definition so that you can hook them up to an external system.
