Zerg Scouting Instruction

By Eric Bator

Scouting is extremely important to being able to win in Starcraft 2. When you learn what your opponent is planning, you can alter your tactics and alter your build based upon that knowledge.

Scouting in SC2 is one of the most vital abilities you require to master to become a Diamond League gamer. For instance, with advanced scouting, you'll forsee the rush attack way before your opponent is at your door and it becomes unavoidable you are going to lose. You will have the foresight to defend your buildings and retaliate in a well strategized way.

Scouting is probably most vital for the Zerg race, since they are so highly specialized. A winning overall technique is to always harass your opponent while you also scout him. This tactic permits you to see the enemy forces while slowing them down, and also lets you determine which troops you need to construct in order to counter-attack him. Zerg's can use Mutalisks combined with Zerglings to continually harass an opponent while spying on him.

Scouting early in the war will usually not tell you too much about your opponent's technology, but will let you know if you're going to get rushed or not. For instance, if you are spying on Terrans and they have a finished Refinery built before they've constructed their Barracks, you will probably be attacked by Reapers. If you are scouting Protoss and they have constructed 2 Gateways before their Cyber Core is built, and you find no vespine gas, then you should get ready for a Zealot rush attack.

To ensure that you aren't rush attacked use your Overlord do early spying, not your Drones. However, it is a good idea to deploy in a Drone scout if your Overlord is can't discover the opponent's base, especially in close air positions with 4 player maps. A guaranteed plan that can be initiated against every species in the battle is to send in one or two Drones to your opponent's base to look around in the early stages of the game. The moment your Drones are under the threat of being eliminated, produce an extractor inside the enemy base. Each and every time your tries to kill it, abort the build and simply create a new one. By performing this technique, you will slow down your enemy's technology upgrades by tying up their gas. It is important to remember that you need to cancel the Extractors very soon in order to elude a 75 mineral loss - the elimination of both the Drone and the Extractor.
