COUNTER-STRIKE DEATH MATCH Popular First Person Shooter Computer Game

By Erik Lander

Counter-Strike Death Match (CSDM) is an action-packed computer game that is part of the popular Counter Strike series. Other games in the series include Counter-Strike Source and Counter-Strike twisted Death Match. The latest version is 2.1 released as a fix of all known major bugs with spectator glitches, re-spawning, various API inadequacies, and spawn point creation. It also adds many features requested by players.

The game focuses on the modern phenomenon of terrorism in the current contemporary world. Players are cast as terrorists battling with good-guy anti-terrorists. The first person shooter or lead player navigates other players into an amazingly realistic set of nail-biting situations or missions including hostage taking and retrieval, prison escapes, assassinations and interrogations. Part of the appeal of the game is the stark good guy-bad guy dichotomy that has transcended story telling through the ages.

In addition to single-player games, the Counter Strike Death Match platform features multiplayer options. Up to 20 players can play at one game, either by joining together as allies to accomplish missions or by battling each other as enemies.

Counter-Strike Death Match is complicated in its historical origins and development. It first came to life as closed source software written by a developer different to the team that developed it as open source. That closed source product had limited success. It did not attract many gamers. It is commonly referred to as CS dm to identify it as closed source.

Open source CSDM is available online as a download free of charge. It is distributed as a Mod X plug-in AMX that sits on a warrior computer. The plug-in delivers the Death Match type of play to Version 1.6 of Counter Strike. The prime source code remains located remotely on a base server. As a result, Internet connectivity is needed to engage in online play. The game is available 24x7.

The closed source version C-Sdm was written by lekstugan dot net. The open source version has been written and developed by a three-person team consisting of David BAILOPAN Anderson, Mike freecode Vvedenskiy and Borja faluco Ferrer. It was first released around January 2004. It was created on request for Schroet Kommando Catch-Gamer. The game quickly became very popular around the world. It is estimated that the game now runs on about one thousand servers.

Counter Strike Source was first distributed as an online download by Valve Corporation. It incorporates the powerful Source game engine. That is the same engine used within the Half-Life 2 game, another product created by Valve Corp.

Valve Corp is a USA-based video game development company founded in 1996. It gained worldwide recognition with its first game, release in November 1998, titled Half-Life. It is headquartered in Bellevue Washington. The company is known globally for its fine presentation of first-person shooters (FPS). FPS is the name given to an entire genre of video games where the focus of the gameplay is centered around weapon-based combat as viewed through the eyes of the protagonist, that, the first person perspective.

CSDM has many important enhancements and features including a range of configurable weapon options; the blocking of round re-starts; automatic deletion of old weapons; and weapons that are blockable. And, importantly, it is free and open source.
